Updated even later--OK... You all are good thinkers in thinking it was the heat....here is your hint...it wasn't the heat here that cracked the egg. It was something else. And the eggs were safe until they were put away in the refrigerator.
Soooo close...come on friends....students....don't give up...just a few more hours to get this right. Guess again!!
UPdated later--OK...I have re posted this with the picture and extended the contest to 8pm tomorrow (that would be Wednesday) in the hopes that looking at the picture and noodling over the evidence will produce a clear winner.
We have some very good guesses.
Right now there is disagreement in the fam as to whether we have a correct answer. Some of us think there are answers close enough to merit the prize. Some of us think that the answers are close but don't state the correct cause of the cracking.
So, my recommendation ( as the originator of the contest and one of the fam members who believes we haven't had a winner yet) is to keep thinking, thinking, thinking and repost with another answer...please make sure you clearly state the cause of the cracked egg.
So keep guessing.
Keep thinking.
Keep posting.
We'll check back tonight and announce a winner (we hope).
Till then.
~the Mom
P.S. Make sure you look closely at the cracked egg picture.....

We can't open the picture, but our guess is that they were accidentally put in the freezer.
Well Mercy! My question is
whether cracked or not....did you
cook the eggs?
It seems to me that we have more of a mystery than contest. Shylock might say that Homes did it. I say the eggs were placed too close to Colonel Mustard and the eggs absorded to much of the noxious gases from said mustard. Hence the cracks.
Papster
We can't see the picture either - just a red X.
OKAY, OKAY, WE GOT IT - we were unable to get a good picture before...but now we have - seeping out of the crack of that egg is the yellow yoke - tadada......so the yoke got so hot it expanded violently inside that perfect egg shell that it cracked the shell and began to ooze out...right?
Pappy and Maw Maw xxoo
we will share our winnings with all of those who took time out of their busy life to enter into this world renouned contest.....just send the starbucks card to us...clap, clap, clap.
Best guess: I think as a result of the heat, that the eggs have started to scramble. Didn't you all try as a kid to put an egg on a sidewalk to see if it would cook? I guess it was just we mid-westerners who had nothing else to do but either watch the egg or pick the cow patch!
Charlene
ROFL!! - the visual of Charlene "picking a cow patch" or cooking an egg in the open air is GREAT! Made my day!
:) jen (farmgirl at heart)
I say the heat in the car cooked the eggs a little bit and once they were put in the fridge the sudden change of temperature caused those cracks and then the cooked egg seeped out. Hey wait, aren't you the homeschool mom. i haven't even taught k-5 yet, let alone science. We'll be at caregroup tonight but we will check back to see the results.
I think we should all meet at Starbucks this Sunday and toast the Nam's and the science professor who still isn't sure which came first the chicken or the egg....then we get someone behind the counter to take our picture and we will send to the judges out west....??!!!
We all really are winners!
I'm tired....I'll check for the winner tomorrow - sweet dreams everyone
personally, i didn't find this one that hard...
it was obviously penny who was hungry in the middle of the night, punctured the eggs with her teeth, but then couldn't get a frying pan out of the cabinent, so she put the eggs back!
